Composed at the rosy-fingered dawn of world literature almost three millennia ago, The Odyssey is a poem about violence and the aftermath of war; about wealth, poverty, and power; about marriage and family; about travelers, hospitality, and the yearning for home.
This fresh, authoritative translation captures the beauty of this ancient poem as well as the drama of its narrative. Its characters are unforgettable, none more so than the "complicated" hero himself, a man of many disguises, many tricks, and many moods, who emerges in this version as a more fully rounded human being than ever before.
Written in iambic pentameter verse and a vivid, contemporary idiom, Emily Wilson's Odyssey sings with a voice that echoes Homer's music; matching the number of lines in the Greek original, the poem sails along at Homer's swift, smooth pace.
A fascinating, informative introduction explores the Bronze Age milieu that produced the epic, the poem's major themes, the controversies about its origins, and the unparalleled scope of its impact and influence. Maps drawn especially for this volume, a pronunciation glossary, and extensive notes and summaries of each book make this an Odyssey that will be treasured by a new generation of readers.
评分##这版翻译真的太绝了,见微知著,like the cloth of Ponelope weaved unwoven. 很喜欢结尾的dissatisfaction:人类世界总是不断的有跌入地府的游魂。
评分##讲座通篇只谈"I want..."而不提贴合原作的译者还是第一次见到, 和Fagles相比韵味和仔细程度实在差太远了...是奥德赛的第一位女性译者又如何呢,若是在Hades遇到Penelope,两人也只能have a silent cup of tea吧。Fidelity, such a lonely word.
评分##Excellent translation! I went to her talk at Yale. Such a sharp and attentive scholar. When she read out aloud her own translation--Penelope's dream and the massacre of the suitors, I was enamored by her words. She genuinely loves Homer and her passion for this literature just exuberated in the lecture hall. Energy overflows in her translation!
评分##非常棒,吐血推荐。
评分##(Lattimore and Fagles are more literal, and Fagles has excellent notes, but Fitzgerald is a far better poet, and his Odyssey is magical.) Then I have to try EW's translation...
