根据力的平行四边形则作图，可以看出，力F1和F2的合力F的大小和方向随着F1和F2之间的夹角而变化。当夹角等于0度时，力F1和F2在同一直线上且方向相同，F=/F1/+/F2/(/为绝对值符号)，合力的大小等于两个力的大小之和，合力的方向跟两个力的方向相同。当夹角等于180度时，力F1和F2在同一直线上但方向相反，F=F1-F2，合力的大小等于两个力的大小之差，合力的方向跟两个力中较大的那个力的方向相同。
