1874年，日本启蒙家西周，在《百一新论》中首先用汉文“哲学”来翻译philosophy一词，1896年前后康有为等将日本的译称介绍到中国，后渐渐通行。十九世纪末至二十世纪初，随着新学的兴起，“哲学”一词开始在我国书报杂志中使用，并且很快取代了“玄学”、“形而上学”等不准确的名词，成为通用术语。“哲学”即使人聪慧之学。
