1874年，日本啓濛傢西周，在《百一新論》中首先用漢文“哲學”來翻譯philosophy一詞，1896年前後康有為等將日本的譯稱介紹到中國，後漸漸通行。十九世紀末至二十世紀初，隨著新學的興起，“哲學”一詞開始在我國書報雜誌中使用，並且很快取代瞭“玄學”、“形而上學”等不準確的名詞，成為通用術語。“哲學”即使人聰慧之學。

“哲”一詞在中國起源很早，曆史久遠。如“孔門十哲”，“古聖先哲”等詞，“哲”或“哲人”，專指那些善於思辨，學問精深者，即西方近似“哲學傢”、“思想傢”之謂。 一般認為中國哲學起源東周時期，以孔子的儒傢、老子的道傢、墨子的墨傢及晚期的法傢為代錶，而實際上在之前的《易經》當中，已經開始討論哲學問題。 在東方，哲學一詞通常用來說明一個人對生活的某種看法（例如某人的“人生哲學”）和基本原則（例如價值觀、思想、行為），而在學術上的哲學，則是對這些基本原則的理性根據的質疑、反思，並試圖對這些基本原則進行理性的重建。
