  在物理学的这种颇为平静的状态中,突然闯进了量子论和狭义相对论,自然科学的基础移动了,开始是缓慢的,后来渐渐加快。第一次激烈的讨论是围绕着相对论提出的空间和时间问题展开的。人们应当怎样谈论新的状况呢,人们应当把运动体的洛伦兹收缩看作是真实的收缩,还是把它仅仅看作是一种表现的收缩呢?人们应当说时间空间结构是真正不同于过去所假设的那样呢,还是人们只应当说实验结果能在数学上以这种方式对应于这种新的结构,而作为我们面前事物存在的普遍和必要形式的时间空间仍保持它们过去一贯具有的样子,这许多争论后面的真实问题是这样一个事实,就是人们没有可用来前后一致地谈论新状况的语言。日常的语言是以旧的时间空间概念为基础的,这种语言过去提供了关于测量的部署和测量的结果的唯一无歧义的传达信息的方法。但是实验已经表明,旧的概念不能到处适用。
