Hat, ribbon, bird, rose. To the people on the island, a disappeared thing no longer has any meaning. It can be burned in the garden, thrown in the river or handed over to the Memory Police. Soon enough, the island forgets it ever existed.
When a young novelist discovers that her editor is in danger of being taken away by the Memory Police, she desperately wants to save him. For some reason, he doesn’t forget, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for him to hide his memories. Who knows what will vanish next?

评分3-/5 My first foray into Ogawa's oeuvre left me with a sour feeling that I didn't fully understand what she is trying to achieve with this novel. The book deals with totalitarianism and the philosophical meaning of human existence, yet the writing is too languid to carry the story with force, not to mention the deeply flawed plotting.
评分##I’m only less than half way through but struggling to finish this book. I find the premise too simple, the metaphor too banal, and the plot too flawed to be engaging.
评分##无趣且单薄。伪科幻/文艺作品的反面教材。论科幻，世界秩序和世界观都没搭起来，memory police作为权力机构，其来由、目的、合法性没有一句解释。论文艺，反复描摹记忆消失的感觉，牵强附会，让人只有快进。完成度甚至不如《素食者》。
评分##披着科幻皮的文艺小说，不知道为什么读着读着总是会想到石黑一雄（虽然技法上没得比，这本书的手法上唯一比较精彩就是书中书里打字员的故事了）。设定上有很多事情都没有讲清楚，这也是这本小说屡被诟病的地方，不过我个人还蛮喜欢这一点的——不知道为什么记忆警察要清除你的记忆，不知道他们什么时候要清初你的记忆，甚至有时候都不知道自己具体被清楚了什么，这种莫名其妙、匪夷所思、全无固定标准的审核制度，不就是现实最好的写照么？就跟Hitchcock的《群鸟》一样，你不知道鸟为何而来，才是最恐怖的地方。
