　　施特劳斯和沃格林联手封杀波普尔的故事许多人都知道，但为什么封杀就鲜有人去剖析了。这当然是因为施特劳斯本就以特立独行著称，他和沃格林在背后嘲讽波普尔的书信中也称“这封信不适合给没有资格的人看”。而且当时波普尔在美国学术界声名鹊起，“熟悉他的作品好象成了教授们的一项职责似的”，施特劳斯本就对学术界不抱信心，不站起来正面攻击波普尔也是可以理解的。于是，波普尔就这么莫名其妙的失去了芝大讲席。不过他也并不是毫不知情，因为在《开放社会及其敌人》的第二版里，他的一些声明和修改、补充明显是针对施特劳斯和沃格林两人的。

　　如果把两人书信中的那些谩骂的成分去掉（具体有：不值鄙视、厚颜无耻、一知半解的废物、每一句话都是胡扯、不成功的知识分子的典型产物，卑鄙、粗野、愚笨、半吊子的毫无价值的思想作品），剩下有价值的成分其实并不多。再把主观性的意见去掉，例如沃格林说波普尔对本领域的研究成果视而不见，但他忽略了施特劳斯才是以否定整个西方现代学术界著称的，剩下的只有两条。一条是：波普尔的意识形态倾向太强了；另一条是：波普尔并没有读懂柏拉图。
