作者简介

Marina Lewycka was born in Kiel, Germany at the end of the war and grew up in England. She is the author of three bestselling novels: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, Two Caravans and We Are All Made of Glue.

　　整体小说脉络清晰，一步步宛如侦探小说一样的推进家族史，期间不断展现的父亲著作的《乌克兰拖拉机简史》，一方面让读者明了父亲理想主义的见地——“拖拉机必须始终被当做大自然的辅助者来使用，而非大自然的驾驭者。”由此引申出父亲的结论——“绝不要让技术（青按：其实是他前一段所指“意识形态”）成为你的主人，也绝不要利用它去统驭他人” 这是作者对于书中牵涉到的各种意识形态的观点，也正是这本书想要对言不由衷的理想主义父亲的一个“以子之矛攻子之盾”的回击。

　　故事开始于八十四岁父亲要与三十六岁“波提切利的出水维纳斯”——乌克兰尤物瓦伦蒂娜结婚的电话，这时候，两个因为母亲遗产而已经进入敌对状态的姐妹，不由自主地开始捍卫父亲，其实是捍卫已经过世两年的母亲在家庭里还存在的影子力量，姐姐说“我们必须捍卫他，为了妈妈的缘故。虽说他毫无用处，可她还是我们家庭的一份子，我们不能让他获胜”，也在就在一步步抵御外敌入侵的过程，妹妹明白，“大姐头还和我在一条船上！”，她慢慢了解了自己的家族史，逐渐理解了爱钱如命的姐姐，理解她何以不追究过往——因为“过去肮脏不堪。就像个下水道。你不该在那里玩，别管它，忘掉它”，由此，两人最终回归成为一致御敌的好姐妹，分工合作，终于让乌克兰美女离开了自己的家回乌克兰去了。
