作者把五本筆記穿插在這個故事之中，以此描寫二十世紀中期整個世界的風貌。其中黑色筆記描寫主人公作為作傢在非洲的經曆，涉及殖民主義和種族主義問題；紅色筆記寫她的政治生活，記錄她對斯大林主義由憧憬到幻滅的思想過程，黃色筆記是作者根據自己的愛情生活所創作的一個故事，題為《第三者的影子》；藍色筆記是她的日記，記錄瞭主人公精神的軌跡。四本筆記於是成為一個不安寜的靈魂的四道反光。而最後的金色筆記，卻是作者對人生的一種哲理性總結。在這種貌似無序的結構中，作者展示瞭那個混亂迷惘而多變的時代中一個失重的靈魂的探索和生存。
