在私生活里“自由女性”们也是四面作难，进退维谷。像安娜笔下那位爱上了一名有妇之夫的爱拉一样，她们不愿作者式的贤妻良母，又尚未摆脱渴求保护和依傍的心情；既要应对男友离弃或“不忠”时的嫉妒心与失落感，又要对付把她们当做候补消遣物的那些妻儿俱全，功成名就的“体面”男人们。养育子女是另外一种挑战。安娜的女儿决心反母亲之道而行之，上寄宿学校，做个从众随俗，循规蹈矩的“正常人”。而莫莉的儿子则既继承了母亲们的激进思想、批判精神，又继承了她们的惶恐疑惑。他时而愤世忌俗，时而消极绝望，以至企图自杀，造成双目失明。安娜深感到自己被困于重重矛盾之中，人格分裂，无所适从，于是求助于一位绰号叫“甜大妈”的心理医生，向她吐述自己的焦虑，描述各式各样的梦，并倾听她的分析。
