前言/序言
1. Why I Write
Twenty years ago I joined a Canada-based company. The department I was recruited into was called Contract Administration. At that time there were no trainings at all for new staffs like the popular New Employee Orientation which is now normally organized by Human Resources Team at the corporate level for new staffs . There were no trainings either at the department level. My mind was totally blank then. I was eager to learn in the hope of getting quickly qualified so that I could stand firmly in the company and ensure my job security. Yet the only thing I could do then was to set my audio-visual sensors on alert and focus my attention on whatever other senior staffs spoke in team discussions and how they responded to operational issues. I analyzed what I heard and saw and consulted books afterwards to confirm my understandings. It took me too much time and efforts before I was made sure about my roles and responsibilities in the team and the steps I needed to follow to perform these roles and responsibilities. But still I had no idea about how the company was run and what its structure was.
Years later when I became a department manager, I was determined to compile a department handbook incorporating team job categories, job processes, support documents, job-related parties ~in an effort to let senior staffs follow and new staffs leam for knowledge and performance purposes. I did materialize that determination and successfully completed that handbook. It did help the team a lot.
It has been 20 years now. Foreign enterprises are no longer rare in China. If you are planning to join such enterprises, you need to prepare yourself in two aspects in addition to the specific field you major or specialize in: enterprise knowledge and the English language. Go to bookstores? I myself often go to book stores too. There are countless books about expertise on sales, marketing, import and export, etc. Also there are countless books on English language used in various fields: English on international trade, on negotiations, on tourism, on freight forwarding~, etc. I am not sure if you have the same impression as I have after I have finished reading any one of such books: still blank-nunded about where you will be in a company and what knowledge you need to get equipped with to perform your role in the company. You could easily forget all what you have learned from these books. I tried to figure out the reason why?
