So I was looking around for a new opportunity. The Dieshiqiao Marketwas starting to do very well, and I decided to move into logistics. In1985 I bought a truck with 30,000 yuan and found ready work movingproduct between the station and the market for other traders. Soon Iwas contracting other trucks.
At this point the government began to encourage its officials to establish businesses for themselves, sometimes run through the government's own departments. But in some cases it meant that the same officials who were responsible for the administration of private panieswere also busy setting up businesses peting with the paniesthat they were regulating. And that's what happened to me.
One of the government's businesses was the Cooperative Trade Companyof Haimen, owned by the Transport Bureau. This pany could seehow profitable my business was, and had it in mind to move in, closeme down, and take over. t found myself confronted by a whole series ofadministrative 'inconveniences'.
I plained to the provincial authorities, and escalated the matter tothe governor herself, Ms Gu Xiulian. She ruled in my favor, and told theTransport Bureau that it should be trying to help people like me, notpenalize us. She requested a promise between the two parties.
But ruhngs are one thing, and getting them applied in practice is anothen I continued to suffer harassment for another two years. Eventually I came up with the solution myself. I accepted the reality, andaffiliated my pany to the Transport Bureau cooperative.
Under this arrangement, I carried on in logistics for another fiveyears. I was careful, and put aside 3-4 million yuan. But business wasbeing increasingly difficult. More and more people could see howprofitable the Dieshiqiao logistics work was, and they were trying tomuscle in. The situation was simply being chaotic. I decided topull out of logistics altogether, and that decision would lead me to afuture in South Africa.
