In this novel - a story of irreconcilable loves and infidelities - Milan Kundera addresses himself to the nature of twentieth-century 'Being' In a world in which lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and by fortuitous events, a world in which everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. We feel, says the novelist, 'the unbearable lightness of being' - not only as the consequence of our private acts but also in the public sphere, and the two inevitably intertwine.

Juxtaposing Prague, Geneva, Thailand and the United States, this masterly novel encompasses the extremes of comedy and tragedy, and embraces, it seems, all aspects of human existence. It offers a wide range of brilliant and amusing philosophical speculations and it descants on a variety of styles.

　　男主人公托馬斯是一個外科醫生，因為婚姻失敗，既渴望女人又畏懼女人，因此發展齣一套外遇守則來應付他眾多的情婦。但自從他愛上瞭餐廳的女侍——特麗莎，他開始違反自己的原則，甚至娶她為妻。但同時托馬斯靈肉分離的想法絲毫沒有改變，依然遊移在情婦之間，對全心愛他的特麗莎是一種傷害。特麗莎經常在極度不安的夢靨中醒來，經常猜忌與懷有恐怖想像。此時捷剋政治動亂不安，在蘇黎世的一位權威醫生的邀請下，兩人決定去那裏生活。但是麵對陌生環境的不安與丈夫仍然與情婦私通，特麗莎決定離開，迴到祖國。但是命運與抉擇讓托馬斯迴去找她，此後兩人沒有再分離。他們意識到在一起是快樂的，是摺磨與悲涼裏的快樂，彼此是生命中甜美的負擔。後來他們死於一場車禍。
　　薩賓娜是一個畫傢，曾經是托馬斯的情婦之一，也是特麗莎妒忌的對象。薩賓娜一生不斷選擇背叛，選擇讓自己的人生沒有責任而輕盈的生活。她討厭忠誠與任何討好大眾的媚俗行為，但是這樣的背叛讓她感到自己人生存在於虛無當中。弗蘭茨是被薩賓娜背叛的情夫之一，他因為她而放棄自己堅持的婚姻與忠誠，但是由於薩賓娜的背棄，讓弗蘭茨發現自己過去對於婚姻的執著是可笑的，純屬多餘的假想，他的妻子隻是自己對於母親理想的投射。離婚後，自由自立的單身生活為他生命帶來新的契機，並且瞭解薩賓娜隻是他對革命與冒險生活的追隨。後來他與他的學生相戀，在實際參與一場虛僞遊行活動後，意識到自己真正的幸福是留在他的學生旁邊。一場突然搶劫中，弗蘭茨因為想展現自己的勇氣而蠻力抵抗，卻遭到重擊，在厭惡妻子的陪伴下，無言的死於病榻上。

作者簡介

The Franco-Czech novelist Milan Kundera was born in Brno and has lived in France, his second homeland, since 1975. He is the author of the novels The Joke, Farewell Waltz, Life Is Elsewhere, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Immortality, and the short-story collection Laughable Loves—all originally written in Czech. His most recent novels Slowness, Identity, and Ignorance, as well as his nonfiction works The Art of the Novel, Testaments Betrayed, The Curtain, and Encounter, were originally written in French.
