这部作品卷帙浩繁，用古法文写成，又引用了希腊、意大利等国的语言，以及大量拉丁语，因此翻译难度相当大。本书积累了组译出版《追忆似水年华》的成功经验，采用了蒙田死后于１５９５年经过增订的定本，于１９９３年开始组译，历经四年之久，分成三卷一次推出。这是蒙田随笔的第一个全译本，参与该书的译者都是研究和翻译法国文学富有经验的学者，为译出蒙田随笔特有的思想火花和语言魅力，各位译者都付出了巨大的努力，翻译态度是极为严谨的，读者可以从中真实地窥见到蒙田的思想、风格及他所生活的时代的风俗民情蒙田在文中论述的有些观点也许未必正确，但读者可以从随笔的总体上吸收他的思想和艺术精华，并收到启智怡情的功效。

这本书买得太值了，特别厚一大本。

而读蒙田的书，按我的理解，他的思想以温柔敦厚为教化，以中庸为和尚。与其他哲学家不同，怀疑论在他思想中不过是看问题的一个出发点。他怀疑的是教条，是俗世的偏见，是极端的狂热，是对一切言之有理的事情做一番怀疑。但他不是彻底的怀疑论者，用他的话说：“彻底的怀疑论者容易对世事失去了信心与恒力。”
