毕业于伦敦St. Martin's College的McQueen，16岁时曾跟随Savile Row的裁缝师Anderson和Shepard，以及Gieves and Hawkes当学徒，因为不太喜欢在米兰生活，Alexander于1992年返回伦敦，进入培育过众多知名时装设计师的著名的圣马丁皇家艺术学院修读时装设计。毕业时，他推出了自己的首个独立的服装发布会，那次的毕业作品除了为Alexander赢取了硕士学位外，更获得著名造型设计师Isabella Blow的赏识。Isabella对McQueen的才华推崇备至：“Alexander吸引我的地方，是他懂得从过去吸取灵感，然后大胆地加以‘破坏’和‘否定’，从而创造出一个全新意念，一个具有时代气息的意念。他象一个偷窥的小孩，在残破的布料中，寻找最性感的地带。” 他曾经为英国查理斯王子缝制服装，随后并为Koji Tatsuno和Romeo Gigli工作，1992年，McQueen成立了自己的服装品牌，并在1996年得到“英国年度最佳设计师”的荣誉，同年，继John Galliano之后成为Givenchy的首席设计师，开始为这个拥有40年历史的经典老牌设计服装。
