Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. They are headed by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP's chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. 有瞭文字，首先需要尋找寫刻的材料。最早書寫材料都取自於自然界，如：石塊、樹皮、樹葉、獸皮、獸骨及動物的甲殼等等，都是其例。但這些材料，各有缺陷，無法充分發揮文字的紀錄功能。春鞦戰國時代，知識日漸普及，著書立說，大行其道，為應需要，簡書和帛書乃相繼産生。「簡」是用竹或木製成狹長的條片，書寫時，由上而下，一片一片接續下來，然後再依順序由右而左的排列，並以繩索加以編連，這樣一部著作，便能連貫而完整。帛書是絲織品寫成的圖書，由於帛性柔軟又輕便，攜帶及閱讀均感便利。隻是簡書笨重，帛書昂貴，都不利於知識的普及及圖書的長期發展，因而人們又發明紙張來取代它們。
