It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. 雕版印刷术约在初、盛唐时代出现，由于它是手工业时代生产图书的好方法，因此很快被推广利用，成为五代、两宋以後生产图书的主力。为了使印刷技术更便捷与美观，宋仁宗庆历年间（公元一○四一～一○四八）又有人发明活字排版印刷。而元朝末年，更进步到彩色套印的印刷领域。从此之后，印刷技术不但成熟周全，印刷成品更是鲜丽动人。

纸的出现，约在西汉时期，史书正式的纪录是公元一○五年。由于纸张具有轻柔及低廉的长处，因而，很快的成为生产图书最主要的材料。纸出现以后，虽然解决了图书生产方面的许多问题，但是生产图书，犹停留在逐字逐本的抄写，既费时又费力，还是欠缺方便。人们遂从长期使用印章和捶拓碑碣文字的经验中，启发了雕版与印刷技术的结合使用，便捷快速的生产图书方法，终于发明。以古法示范造纸过程。

有了文字，首先需要寻找写刻的材料。最早书写材料都取自于自然界，如：石块、树皮、树叶、兽皮、兽骨及动物的甲壳等等，都是其例。但这些材料，各有缺陷，无法充分发挥文字的纪录功能。春秋战国时代，知识日渐普及，着书立说，大行其道，为应需要，简书和帛书乃相继产生。「简」是用竹或木制成狭长的条片，书写时，由上而下，一片一片接续下来，然後再依顺序由右而左的排列，并以绳索加以编连，这样一部著作，便能连贯而完整。帛书是丝织品写成的图书，由于帛性柔软又轻便，携带及阅读均感便利。只是简书笨重，帛书昂贵，都不利于知识的普及及图书的长期发展，因而人们又发明纸张来取代它们。
