The authors add a wickedly funny touch with the introduction of the Funmarts, a dollhouse family meant to placate Kate's little sister, who's always messing with the Dolls. The Funmarts are a brash, breezy family of plastic dolls who can't believe the Dolls don't have a microwave. Still, Anabelle and Tiffany Funmart become friends and are soon taking great risks to find out what happened to Aunt Sarah. The story gets a wonderful boost from Brian Selznick's pencil drawings, which include charming endpapers. He catches every bit of humor, especially when he's drawing those Funmarts.

Laura Godwin, also known as Nola Buck, is the author of many popular picture books for children. Born and raised in Alberta, Canada, she now lives in New York City.

Ann M. Martin is the author of many books for young readers, including Belle Teale, A Dog’s Life, and A Corner of the Universe, a 2003 Newbery Honor Book. She is also the co-author, with Paula Danziger, of P.S. Longer Letter Later and Snail Mail No More. Ms. Martin makes her home in upstate New York.
Brian Selznick is the remarkable illustrator of many books for children, including The Doll People, a 2000 Notable Children’s Book; Barnyard Prayers by Laura Godwin; Riding Freedom by Pam Muñoz Ryan; and The Houdini Box, winner of the 1991 Texas Bluebonnet Award, which he also wrote.

　　片面强调大量识字的一个更隐性也更可怕的后果是，它很有可能会导致孩子对阅读丧失兴趣。有研究者通过研究发现，那些识字量大的幼儿其阅读的自主性和阅读兴趣反而更低。其实对于年幼的孩子来讲，阅读应该像吃饭、说话和游戏一样，是一种自然而然的活动，而不是需要完成的作业，不需要外界强加给他们。盲目、大批、快速的识字只会加重儿童的负担与压力，使孩子觉得阅读是一件十分痛苦的事情，孩子甚至见字就怕，产生强烈的厌学情绪。更严重的还会出现心理行为问题，像睡眠障碍、饮食障碍、情绪障碍(如恐惧、焦虑、易怒等)，遗尿、多动和抽动(如挤眼等)。用如此大的代价来换取儿童的识字量是得不偿失的。

　　可是神奇树屋故事的幻想世界却不算是漫想式的(至少大部分不算)，而是联想式的。神奇树屋的故事从现实世界出发，通过神奇树屋而进入一个个不同寻常的时空，让主人公开始他们的冒险。神奇树屋故事里的另外的时空算不上是一个完全的幻想世界，而仍然是一个现实世界，某个过去的、历史的世界，或者某个在地球另一端的世界。这些虽然是现实的世界，可其魅力就在于，这些世界是那些翻开神奇树屋故事的孩子们永远无法或者难于亲身到达的。不可到达，本身就是好奇和幻想的襁褓。而神奇树屋真正的“想象力”不在于创造一个想象的世界，而在于开启一扇想象的门——那个可以穿梭时空的神奇树屋。
