Virginia Lee Burton (August 30, 1909, in Newton Centre, Massachusetts – October 15, 1968) was an American illustrator and children's book author. Burton wrote and illustrated seven self-illustrated children's books, including the Caldecott Medal winning The Little House. Also known by her married name Virginia Demetrios. She died in 1968 of lung cancer. The importance of Virginia Lee Burton's work for the development of modern environmentalism is discussed in a 2011 academic article published by the Journal of Urban History.

维吉尼亚?李?伯顿1909年8月30日生于美国马萨诸塞州的Newton Center，1968年10月15日去世。她的母亲是个诗人和音乐家，父亲是麻省理工学院的首任教务长。从小就生活在充满艺术气息的氛围中，她回忆童年时，人们聚集在市中心唱英格兰民歌、围着五月柱跳舞，父亲的礼物不是玩具而是故事书；8岁时由于母亲的健康原因，他们搬到加利福利亚的一个小镇，那里住着很多艺术家，镇里有三座剧场，经常有各种表演、彩排。伯顿儿时的理想是做一个芭蕾舞演员，中学时她得到一笔奖学金，去旧金山跟一位舞蹈教师学习芭蕾。路途遥远，她每天要做火车、换轮渡、再转有轨电车去学校，至少要花两个小时——她用来捕捉各种生活场景、给陌生人画速写。
