是哈拉爾德·達爾（Harald Dahl），母親是蘇菲·瑪德蓮·達爾（Sofie Magdalene Dahl），都是挪威人。達爾一傢在1880年代由挪威遷往卡地夫。羅爾德是因一個當時挪威的民族英雄北極探險傢羅爾德·亞孟森而得名的。他在傢中跟他的父母及姊妹說的是挪威語。達爾和他的姊妹在卡地夫挪威水手的教會施洗及命名，那裏是他們父母上的教會。
