其實，蘇斯博士並沒有真正獲得過博士學位。1925年自達特茅斯大學畢業後，他又去牛津大學攻讀文學博士學位，但因為受不瞭沉悶枯燥的學校生活而中途輟學。他開始進行兒童文學創作時需要一個筆名，就饒有風趣地用上瞭“蘇斯博士”。他說：“我父親一直希望看到我的名字前能冠上‘博士'，我就自己加上去瞭。這樣做我想至少省瞭他上萬塊錢”。
