　　平剋試圖揭示齣隱藏在各種自然語言背後的共有的語法結構，他這部分工作主要在書中的第四章“語言如何運作”中完成。他的論證策略可以歸結如下：首先，他從語言學上一個被普遍承認的原則談起，即“語言可以用有限的中介去做無限的應用”（make infinite use of finite media），這個規則最早由語言學傢洪特提齣。平剋認為，這錶明我們可以用一套規則去翻譯字序和思維之間的關係，而這套規則是“生成語法”（generative grammar）。通過瞭解生成語法，我們就可以知道人是如何造齣句子的。而其中一個生成語法模型被稱為“字串模型”（word-chain model）。平剋指齣瞭字串模型的若乾個睏難，重新提齣瞭樹狀模型。如果樹狀模型成立，則X-bar理論成立，繼而可以得齣所有語言都具有X-bar理論所描述的語法結構。當然，前提是生成語法首先要成立。

　　再有，字串模型會産生齣不閤文法的單詞串。平剋舉齣瞭一段文字：”House to ask for is to earn our living by working towards a goal for him team in old New York was a wonderful place wasn’t it ever pleasant to talk about and laugh hard when he tells lies he should not tell me the reason why you are in evident.” 很顯然，這段文字盡管詞與詞之間存在很高的轉接或然率，但卻完全不閤文法。
