　　首先，字串模型会产生不出一些合文法的句子。根据字串模型，单词与单词之间必须要存在很高的转接或然率。但我们的日常语言中却存在某些句子，其单词与单词之间几乎是没有关联的。平克引用了乔姆斯基的句子“Colorless green ideas sleep furiously”。但按照我们的直接，尽管这些句子没有意义，但却是符合语法的。并且，这种类型的句子经常会被当作是一种创作手法出现在诸如诗歌、散文等文学作品中。但字串模型却无法产生出这种句子，因为每个单词之间的转接或然率都为0。

　　语言学上的乔姆斯基传统认为，每个人都具有先天的语法知识（inborn grammar knowledge）；这种先天的语法结构使得地球上所有自然语言的基本语法都是相同的，这套基本语法被为原则（principle）；而各种自然语言都有一些相对细微的差别，这些差别被称为参数（parameter）。所以，幼儿习得语言的过程就是学习参数的过程；通过了解参数，幼儿能够将先天的语法转换为各种特定语言的语法，从而快速地习得语言。这套理论被称为“原则/参数”理论。
