阿廷在他与J.T.塔特合写的类域论(1951～1952)的讲稿中提出了类结构的概念，将局部的和整体的、数域的和代数函数域的类域论纳入同一个公理化体系中。

研究数域上阿贝尔扩张的理论。它的基本思想是用基域的算术性质去刻画它上面的阿贝尔扩张。设 k是一数域，I是k的一切非零的分式理想构成的乘法群,I也记作l(k)。对于k上的任一阿贝尔扩张K,存在I的一个狭义子群h与K对应,使得k的每个素理想P在K中分裂的充分必要条件是P属于h。[1]
