Master Xi had once lived in Yongjia and had been wanting toreturn．Yethe had not come to any decision because of the great distance．Upon waking，he considered it all strange indeed and recorded it in hisnotebook．He then prepared a boat in which to go east．He also tookt11e cofin of his father to Wen Prefecture，who had once been a vicecensor-in-chief．
The day of the funeral was pressing，yet in no way had they fixedthe location of the plot．Xi had called upon Zhang Zao of Xiaoshan toascertain the site when they all stopped ata mountain temple．Hisnephew，Qilang，had gone to buy food at a farmhouse．The owner asked him where he was going and SO he told him．

作为中国四大名著之一的《红楼梦》是一部关于中国封建社会的百科全书，其中涉及当时社会的政治、经济、文化、宗教、民风民俗、教育等方面，所蕴涵的丰富文化内容是古今史学家和文学家研究的焦点之一。杨宪益和戴乃迭的红楼梦和霍克斯的译本即《石头记》The Story of the Stone一样，皆为经典，很不容易。六十年代初，杨宪益和戴乃迭夫妇开始翻译《红楼梦》，其间曾一度中断，最后于1974年完成，于1978—1980年由外文出版社分三卷出版，译文书名为“A Dream of Red Mansions”。 上述各种译本在国外皆获得好评，并有广泛影响。1993年在香港大学获得名誉博士学位。
