贫富不均渐趋恶化已是当前极受热议的问题。它的原因究竟是什麽？尽管众说纷纭，但各种议论的资料根据似乎略嫌不足。

Piketty从税收与遗产纪录著手，搜集整理横跨二十几个国家、长达二百多年的数据资料，藉此分析工业革命以来的全球财富分配动态，从中提出一个系统而全面的解释。

这个源自庞大实证资料的见解，其核心概念相当简单：从历史证据来看，资本报酬率通常大于整体的经济成长率，也就是说，有钱人财富增生累积的速度快过一般人工作收入增加的速度，因此富者将愈来愈富，占掉社会大部分的所得与财富份额。

Piketty认为，各国政府应积极改革税制，减低财富过度集中的趋势，否则将危害民主社会依照个人才能与努力决定报酬的基本价值，我们也很可能回到十九世纪那种贫富极度不均的景况。

本书出版后造成十分罕见的讨论热潮，在经济学界引起强烈迴响，多位诺贝尔经济学奖得主亦撰文解析，推崇“此书将改变我们思索社会与研究经济学的方式”。

巴黎经济学院（PSE）、法国社会科学高等学院（EHESS）教授。二十二岁便获得伦敦政经学院及社会科学高等学院经济学博士学位，随后到美国麻省理工学院经济系任教，一九九五年返回巴黎，陆续担任法国国家科学研究中心（CNRS）研究员、社会科学高等学院教授、巴黎经济学院教授。

经常替《解放报》撰写专栏，偶尔替《世界报》撰写社论。对经济发展以及所得与财富分配之间的相互关系有重要的历史与理论研究成果，针对高所得群体占国民所得份额的长期演变，他也是文献累积的主要推手，如今都收在「全球高所得资料库」（WTID）。

二〇〇二年获得法国青年经济学家奖，二〇一三年获得叶留扬森奖（Yrj? Jahnsson Award），是专门表彰对经济学研究有重大贡献的四十五岁以下欧洲经济学家的重要奖项。
