开本是小32开，像近年三联书店喜欢出版的大小，内页很棒，没想到原版书也有这么好纸质的版本，感觉封面软了点，不过没什么妨碍。

《源氏物语》的作者是日本平安时代（公元794-1192）的著名女文学家紫式部（973－1015），紫式部本姓藤原，字不详。按照日本古代妇女没有名字的惯例，紫式部只是后人给她写的作品上加题上的名字。因其长兄任式部丞，而当时宫中女官往往以其父兄的官衔为名，以显其身份，所以称为藤式部；后来因她所写《源氏物语》中的紫姬深为世人喜爱，遂改称紫式部。作者生卒年月不详，普遍认为是生于978年，死于1015年。紫式部出身于充满书香气的中等贵族家庭，是一位极富才情的女子，其祖父等辈及兄长都是当时有名的歌人，父亲更是长于汉诗和歌，对中国古典文学颇有研习。作者因此自幼得以随父学习汉诗，并熟读中国古代典籍，她不仅对白居易的诗有很深的造诣，而且还十分了解佛经和音乐。紫式部家道中落，曾给藤原宣孝做过继室（或侧室），生女藤原贤子；丈夫去世后，依赖父兄生活，寡居十年。后由藤原道长聘为一条天皇中宫藤原彰子的侍读女官，讲解白居易的诗，在宫中供职期间，紫式部写了《紫式部日记》、《紫式部集》等作品，《源氏物语》是她写给天皇与中宫供消遣的读物（也有的说是其对其父的作品整理加工完善得到）。
