　　和真正的人文主义者苏格拉底相比，柏拉图最大的局限在于对等级论的坚持。在他的理想国中，男性地位远高于女性。试着想象他的理想国，难免不寒而栗：取消一夫一妻，实行妻子儿女公有化；为了种族纯洁而实行杀婴计划；“奴隶恰如其分地受到鄙视”。另外，他认为“男人作为动物界中的最高等级，由诸神创造，其他物种是由其衰败和退化发生的”，这种颇狂妄的观念如何从远古社会导出？男人的优越性又有哪些例证？秉持历史主义的柏拉图带着有色眼镜看待历史，所以他对于男女分工、男女对社会发展不同作用的论述难免有点偏颇，就好像带着寻找玫瑰花的心理走到花丛，始终会聚焦于那些红色花朵而未能全面看到满园春光。在构建理想国上，他认为最好的统治者是“哲学王”，因为他的思想超越群众，直接和神进行交流，并根据神的指示复原最好的城邦。波普尔对哲学王建设城邦异议不多，但直接质疑：哲学王的继承者如何生成，哲学王是否在于神交流外，可以妥善培养后继者？读过《理想国》的人必定记得，知识、音乐、体操是柏拉图对培养人才提出的三大要素。知识的作用无需赘言；合适的音乐可以激发人对于同类的善意；而城邦的保护者更需要的是对敌人的凶残。柏拉图认为体操可以培养到这点。他认为，向训练狗一样训练城邦的保护者才是明智的。他的许多措施，令人错愕。若联想修昔底德的“父道国家”，这种呼应性确实引人深思。
