　　　　更值得注意的是，比爾博的旅途直接連接瞭《魔戒》和《霍比特人》，在一場看上去充滿滑稽又生死一綫的賭局中，他從咕嚕手中贏得瞭後者的“寶貝”——看過《魔戒》的人都知道這是什麼。這場賭局中比爾博錶現得不乏機智，不過還是要說運氣在此起到瞭極大作用。這是托爾金著作中古典思想的另一體現，那些在無意中轉摺曆史的人是命運的使者，天命在不知不覺中降臨在他們身上，而最終將以此戰勝惡而朝嚮善。

在看英文版的魔戒，但是對於中土世界裏的各個地方沒有認識，所以趁著活動購入瞭這本書，打算對照著來看魔戒。

　　　　所以我們不奇怪為什麼比爾博能夠得享遐齡，在最後也踏上遠去永生之地的船隻。哪怕在一個危險的世界裏，一個善人如果具有明智和審慎的品質，總會得到命運的青睞，這是《霍比特人》魅力長盛不衰之處，也是宅男比爾博旅程的終點。　霍比特人不是傳說。霍比特人在人類考古學上有一席之位。而托爾金筆下的霍比特人顯然豐滿可愛的多。他們又矮又可愛，是一幫友愛、快樂的小男人。他們並不漂亮但脾氣絕好，性格有些保守和膽怯，但他們打洞和做傢務的本領超一流。當然，最讓人難忘的還有他們那長滿長毛的毛茸茸的大腳丫。這麼一群世俗而又平常的人，是不是跟我們自己很像呢？！或者他們原本就是我們人類的影子。平凡、保守、膽怯，甚至還有這樣或那樣的缺點。然而，正是這樣一個普通得像影子一樣的霍比特人，經曆瞭一次非比尋常的探險旅行。
