　　　　更值得注意的是，比爾博的旅途直接連接瞭《魔戒》和《霍比特人》，在一場看上去充滿滑稽又生死一綫的賭局中，他從咕嚕手中贏得瞭後者的“寶貝”——看過《魔戒》的人都知道這是什麼。這場賭局中比爾博錶現得不乏機智，不過還是要說運氣在此起到瞭極大作用。這是托爾金著作中古典思想的另一體現，那些在無意中轉摺曆史的人是命運的使者，天命在不知不覺中降臨在他們身上，而最終將以此戰勝惡而朝嚮善。
